Learn to Dive (Adult & Children)
Learn to Dive 1: Learn to dive 1 is the first stage of our Academy pathway. This course is designed for complete beginners, during each 30 minute session you will learn the fundamental and basic skills of diving. Courses will be made fun and exciting and will cover basic progressions from poolside and low level diving boards.
Learn to Dive 2: Learn to Dive 2 gradually increases the difficulty of basic diving skills. Here you will develop forward diving skills on poolside on the low level boards.
Learn to Dive 3: Learn to Dive 3 builds on the skills learnt in Learn to Dive 1 and Learn to Dive 2. Difficulty will be increased again on the basic diving skills. Here you will develop backward facing dives and be introduced to diving backwards from the poolside.
Learn to Dive 4: Learn to Dive 4 develops both the forward and backward increasing in difficulty. Both dive groups will be taught on poolside and the lower diving boards. The forward skills will be built up to 3m. Learnt to Dive skills 1, 2 and 3 will still be recapped.
Learn to Dive 5: Learn to Dive 5 is the last level of the Learn to Dive Academy. This level will look for all skills learnt in Learn to Dive 1-4 and will continue to be assessed on those skills. The National Sports Campus Development Authority manages the National Aquatic Centre’s Diving Programme under the direction of a professional coaching team. The diving programme is split into two primary sections:
E SQUAD – Entry Squad
The Entry Squad forms the base of our Training Squad structure and acts as the bridge from our Learn to Dive Academy. The aim is to introduce a squad environment where athletes participate in more than one session per week and are introduced to the fundamentals of dry land training. Athletes will have the option to take part in grass roots competitions, through a recognised diving club, and the coaches will take a detailed approach to tracking and monitoring athlete progress.
The T Squad forms an important part of our Talent Pathway and provides an exit route, from the Learn to Dive Academy, for divers identified by our coaching team as having the potential to be fast tracked into competitive diving.
The TID Squad is generated from specialised Primary School talent identification projects and forms the base of our Talent Pathway. Access to this squad is strictly controlled by the coaching team, who use there expert eyes and judgement to access children’s potential to reach an elite level in diving.
Participants take part in multiple sessions per week, following a dry land and pool based training programme, and athletes will have the option to take part in grass roots competitions, through a recognised diving club.
Coaches will regularly monitor progress and development to ensure that athletes remain on a pathway towards an elite level. The maximum length of time an athlete can remain in the TID Squad is two years.
D SQUAD – Development Squad
The Development Squad is our main stream Novice Skills competition squad. This is a progression from our Entry Squad where divers will see an increase in training hours and a more enhanced dryland and pool based training programme. The Development Squad has a key focus of preparing athletes for the major novice skills competitions, and at the same time working on new dives required to transition to Age Group competitions.
The ‘A’ Team is a side arm of the Development Squad and has been specifically set up to cater for divers aged 14-18. The ‘A’ Team has a key focus of preparing athletes for the major novice skills competitions, and at the same time working on new dives required to transition to Age Group competitions. There is less expectancy to participate in competition than the Development Squad.
C SQUAD – Age Group Squad
The Age Group Squad is the pinnacle of our main stream squad structure. This squad incorporates our National Age Group competitive divers plus those divers with a realistic chance of achieving Age Group standards within 12 months of joining the squad.
The training becomes more intense than Development Squad, with an increase in training hours, an increase in physical dry land work and an expectancy to learn new dives. Coaches will use a detailed approach to tracking and monitoring progress to ensure athletes are maintaining or moving towards the set standards.
B SQUAD – Elite Development Squad
The Elite Development Squad marks the main body of our Talent Pathway and is made up of the very best athletes exiting our talent base. Access to this squad is strictly controlled by the Head Coach and invitations will be given to those athletes that have demonstrated potential to perform in Elite level competitions. The demands and commitment levels are much higher than squads in our main stream pathway.
Coaches will use a detailed approach to tracking and monitoring progress to ensure athletes are maintaining or moving towards Elite performance in competitions through a recognised diving club.
A SQUAD – National Elite Squad
The Elite National Squad is the peak of our Talent Pathway and contains our highest level athletes. Entry to this squad is for athletes with a proven track record of performing in Elite competitions through a recognised diving club.
The aim is to provide a comprehensive training programme with an elite focus. A serious commitment to training and the development of high degree of difficulty dives is required. The commitments and expectations are higher than all other squads in order to achieve optimum competition performances.
Our Junior Masters Squad is a more relaxed version of our ‘A’ Team and is suitable for divers that wish to remain in the sport without the expectations and commitments required in the other squads.
This group is ideal for experienced divers wishing to keep active whilst managing academic commitments, such as the Leaving Certificate.
This squad will be a mixed ability and the coaches will encourage divers to contribute to their own goal setting and content.
The Masters Squad is an adult based training group and incorporates participants that have progressed onwards from our Adult Learn to Dive Academy plus athletes participating in Masters competitions.
Coaches will encourage participants to set their own targets and goals. Participants should be aware that this is a mixed ability group and participants will naturally have differing aims and commitment levels.
The Performance Squad is the pinnacle of our training squad programme. This squad is directly linked to the Swim Ireland Performance Pathway. A serious commitment to training is required and athletes must demonstrate an elite and professional attitude at all times.
The squad works in partnership with Swim Ireland, Sport Ireland and the Irish Institute of Sport. Athletes receive a bespoke training programme working towards optimum performance in significant International events.
