Swim Academy Registration

To register for the Swim Academy at the Sport Ireland Campus, you must register and pay online - HERE. To identify what level is suitable for your child/ you and which level to register for, please read details on each class below:

The Sport Ireland Campus Academies are run on a continuous rather than 'term' basis, so you can join anytime and purchase in 10 class blocks.  Our automated system will message you when you run low on class credits and you can decide to retain your space in the academy/ renew every 10 classes.  

Please note: a child will be moved to a more appropriate level if our swim teacher deems the child to lack the necessary competencies and abilities for that level or if a child is not settling into that level.

Adult & Baby

Our Adult and Baby classes familiarise babies with the aquatic environment. The adult will be guided as to how to interact and engage with their child safely in the water. The Class focuses on fun, using toys and songs introducing floating, kicking and other fundamental aquatic skills. The Class is delivered with the teacher in the water. Parent in water with child. 30 Minute class, located in Aquazone

19 to 36

months

Adult & Toddler Our Adult and Toddler class has been designed to develop your child’s independence in the water. The Class focuses on developing kicking, paddling, floating and aquatic breathing skills with the aim of providing your child with the skills to be able to move short distances through the water unassisted. Your child will progress from this class armed with the confidence of taking their next step on their swimming journey, swimming without their adult in the water. Age 3 upwards Splash Our Splash class is designed for children aged 3 upwards who have progressed from our Adult and Toddler class. It also caters for children who are coming into our programme for the 1st time who are comfortable swimming without a parent present in the water. This class is divided into subgroups that allow us to give the time and attention needed to work with the child at their own development stage of their aquatics journey. The Class focuses on teaching submersion, independent swimming, kicking, floating and introducing propulsion through the water. For the comfort and reassurance of your child at least one accompanying parent/ guardian must always be poolside for the duration of the class. 30 Minute class, located in Aquazone

Waves Required- Ability to comfortably enter the water independently and to demonstrate they are comfortable being in the water (being splashed etc.) they can book automatically into our Waves class. From Pre School to the big pool, this class is for swimmers who are comfortable in the water on their own with or without an aid. These swimmers learn important foundation skills such as aquatic breathing, confidence, buoyancy and balance providing the groundwork for all aquatic skills while still having fun. Class is taught with the teacher in or out of the water (40-minute lessons held in main pool area)

Age 5

Level 1 Required – Ability to comfortably stand in 1m of water. If your child can try at putting their face in the water, move independently and attempt floating on their front and back with or without an aid.; they can book into our level 1 class. After mastering the foundation skills in our Waves class swimmers are now at the starting point for developing the essential technique for each stoke and other aquatic skills, helping them along their swimming pathway. This class focuses on good body position on front and back, aquatic breathing and submersion while allowing swimmers to explore and discover movement through the water. The Class is taught with the teacher out of the water. (40-minute lessons held in main pool area

 

Senior Children’s Programme

From Level 2 upwards parents can book their child into the Level that corresponds to the child’s ability as detailed in the criteria below.

From here the child’s first class will assess their ability and competency to determine if they should continue their swim journey within that level or move to a more appropriate level within our programme. (note: this may be an upward or downward move depending on the coach’s assessment).

Please note that after assessment your child may be moved to a level for which there is no availability on your preferred time/day, in which case you can transfer to a different day or you can be issued with a refund.

Age Class What to expect from the Class Assessment & Qualifying Criteria

Age 5

Level 2 This level focuses on moving through the water with a more refined and productive streamline body position. When swimmers progress from this level they will be able to maintain a good streamline body position while using the appropriate leg kick for each stroke. Class is taught with the teacher out of the water (40-minute lessons held in the main pool area)

1. Float on their front without and aid while maintaining a good body position on top of the water

2. Float on their back without and aid while maintaining a good body position on top of the water

3. Exhale through their mouth and nose under the water

4. Stand up from a floating position

Age 5 upwards Level 3 This level focuses on moving through the water with an effective leg action while using the appropriate arm action for each stroke. Class is taught with the teacher out of the water (60-minute lessons held in main pool area)

1. Push and glide into streamline position on front and back and propel through the water for 5m

2. Can they Submerge under the water and touch the pool floor with their hand?

3. Show an understanding of breaststroke

4. Comfortable in deep water

Age 6

Level 4 This level combines all the skills learnt from previous levels to develop the four competitive strokes; Front crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly. Class is taught with the teacher out of the water. (60-minute lessons held in main pool area)

1. Maintain a streamline body position on front with a good leg action and attempt Front crawl arm pull

2. Maintain a streamline body position on back with a good leg action and attempt Backstroke arm pull

3. Attempt Breaststroke arms and legs

4. Swim comfortably in deep water

5. Attempt Butterfly arms and legs

Age 7

Level 5 Your child will progress from swimming widths to lengths they will now start building the endurance & foundations for competitive swimming and continuous participation in the aquatic environment. Class is taught with the teacher out of the water (60-minute lessons held in main pool area)

1. Swim 25m in Front crawl in deep water comfortably without holding on to the side of the pool

2. Swim 25m Backstroke in deep water comfortably without holding on to the side of the pool

3. Swim 15m Breaststroke with appropriate leg and arm action

4. Complete 5 consecutive butterfly arm pools

5. Thread water for 30 seconds

6. Jump into deep water

Age 8

Level 6 This level focuses on developing stamina and endurance. Class is taught with the teacher out of the water. (60-minute lessons held in main pool area)

1. Swim 25m Front crawl

2. Swim 25m Backstroke

3. Swim 25m Breaststroke

4. Swim 15m Butterfly

5. Thread water for 1 minute

6. Attempt a dive into deep water

Age 8 upwards Level 7 This level is an hour-long session focusing on skill and technique development, building stamina through endurance with the introduction of set training. Swimmers will gain knowledge in aspects of coaching sessions from reading the clock to understanding warmup and cool down. Sessions are delivered by staff who come from a swim and coaching background, a good basis for passing on their knowledge and opening the aquatic pathway to the next generation. (60-minute lessons held in main pool area)

1. Swim 50m Front crawl

2. Swim 50m Backstroke

3. Swim 50m Breaststroke

4. Swim 25m Butterfly

5. Thread water for 2 minutes

6. Dive into deep water maintaining a glide under water for 3m

7. Complete a kick set for 50m on front and back in streamline position

8. Swimmers require a level of fitness to continue swimming for the duration of the session

Age 8

upwards

Level 8 Progressing from the introduction to set training, this level focuses on a higher level of training with greater intensity. Introducing multiple aspects of aquatic sports including competitive training, water polo and survival skills. Social interaction plays a big part from level 7 where the swimmers are involved in group training session for the 1st time, by level 8 they have bonded into a Team encouraging each other and having fun benefiting from getting to train at Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre , the Home for Swimming in Ireland. (60-minute lessons held in main pool area)

1. Swim 100m Front crawl

2. Swim 100m Backstroke

3. Swim 100m Breaststroke

4. Swim 25m Butterfly

5. Dive into deep water transitioning into stroke at the end of the glide

6. Have a level of fitness to participate in an hour-long swim session of high intensity

7. Attempt a tumble turn against the wall

 

 

 

Teen Academy

If your child is 12 years of age and would like to join our Academy, they can book into the Teen session on Thursday from 19:00 to 19:45 for an assessment. All abilities are welcome to attend an assessment. We have five levels (1-5) within our teen programme. (45-minute lessons held in main pool area)

Pathway (Aged 13 upwards)

If your child can swim 400m (16 lengths of a 25m pool), has good stroke technique for all strokes they can book in for an assessment during our Pathway session on Saturday from 13:00 to 14:00

(2 x 60-minute sessions per week held in main pool area)

Rookie Lifeguard

If your child can swim 100m Front crawl, Backstroke and Breaststroke and is interested in joining our Rookie group they can book in for an assessment during our lifesaving session on Wednesday evening from 17:15 to 19:00

(45 minutes dry land session and 1-hour pool session on Wednesday)

Important Terms & Conditions:

Teachers have the final say in determining the level your child will always be taught. If you register your child to a level above their ability the child will be removed from that level and it will be the parents/guardian’s responsibility to find a more appropriate class time to suit the child’s ability. We ask all participants in our Academy to follow our policies and procedures for delivery and Health and Safety. We deliver our Academy using CoursePro which is a continuous Academy system. Parents/guardian’s must register for this system and top up classes if you wish to retain your place in the class. Parents are requested to be on poolside during assessment times only or at the request of the class teacher and are asked to wear appropriate pools shoe covers over their footwear when poolside.
